The used forklift truck market is extremely competitive and you should shop around to make sure you are getting the best deal possible for the budget you have available. Used reach trucks or other electric forklifts may need a new battery but you can read more about that below in the used electric forklift section.

Used Forklift Trucks for Hire

Lots of companies are wanting to keep the cost of the forklifts to a minimum and hiring a used fork lift truck is a good option. Some companies may use a term like a fork lift lease to describe hire. Forklift truck hire is not the same to lease a forklift. A used diesel forklift truck will often be around £80.00 per week in forklift rent on average. There are several variables to this like the type of application and number of working hours per week. Regional variation also comes into it.

Forklift hire UK prices can and do vary from place to place. For example, a forklift supplier in London may charge more than one in Liverpool. This could be because of the market forces and the higher costs associated with doing business in London. One thing is certain and that is you must shop around for a forklift hire price.

A used electric forklift truck, like a reach truck, will usually cost a similar amount to the diesel counterbalance, circa £80.00. With a reach truck hire, you need to make sure the battery is in good condition because without it the truck is useless. Other costs associated with used hire are the cost of delivery. Now again this will vary by location. For example, if a forklift truck supplier in Bristol has to cross the toll bridge, then this will be factored in. Also, the length of the delivery is a factor too. I will cover more of the is the section below of forklift delivery.

To hire a forklift is an easy ball to get rolling and a lot of people simply start with a Google search “forklift truck hire near me” or “forklift for rent” or “forklift hire near me”. Both searches will bring up a list of local fork lift suppliers. When you are looking into a forklift to rent you will find a lot of jargon and what may sound like a foreign language. Do not worry as with any learning experience in a new industry it takes time to pick up.

Used forklift rental will also come with some clauses. For example, used truck hire does not include or cover accidental damage. This means that if your forklift operator bumps the machine into a wall and bends the forks, you have to buy new ones. Equally light can be a big cost for replacement in hire. They are very easily knocked and the lens broken. A new set of lights for a fork lift truck will run you into £300 to £500 per day including a fork lift engineer’s time to fit them. Speaking of fork lift engineers’ time, it will vary by region but chargeable hourly rates vary from around £60.00 to £100 per hour with a minimum of a 4-hour call-out charge. This means even if the engineer is only onsite for an hour you have to pay the full 4 hours.

So having incredibly careful forklift truck operators using your used forklift is important not just for your business operation but also for your cash reserves. A good forklift rental service will give you a good product at a fair rental price and good back up making for an excellent forklift rental service. After all, you are looking for forktruck solutions!

Used Electric Forklift Trucks for Sale

Electric forklifts can be a great way to save money on your operating costs. Charge them up overnight and they will be ready for you the next morning. The other advantage of charging your electric forklift overnight is that the electricity tariff is lower, saving you money.

Used electric forklifts, if bought or hired correctly will save your company £1000’s. The biggest single risk when buying a used electric forklift is the battery. A new fork lift truck battery will cost you in the region of £3000 to £7000 depending on the specification. So, if you have a powered pallet truck you can expect to pay the lower amount. If you are operating a 5-tonne used electric counterbalance or a 2-tonne reach truck the higher end applies.

An electric forklift truck battery will be 24, 48, or 72 volts and is made up of individual lead-acid cells. When these individual cells begin to deteriorate they create a domino effect. One by one the remaining cells have to pick up the extra duty and become overloaded. So, if you buy a truck with a battery that has a single cell on its way out you are opening up a can of worms.

Control boards and drive motors are 2 other expensive components to replace on a used electric fork lift truck. It’s not just the price of these parts but the time it will take a fork lift engineer to replace them. Drive motors on reach trucks are often damaged because the operator will run the reach truck outside on the uneven ground. This causes excessive vibration through the drive wheel and into the drive motor, damaging the motor and often the wheel bearings too.

If you are considering a used electric fork lift truck you may want to get the battery independently inspected. This will cost around £100 but could save you £1000’s in the long run. If a supplier is a reputable one, they will usually include an independent report within the terms of the sale. It needs to be covered in the forklift truck warranty as part of the conditions of sale.

Warranty is a variable subject and will be different from supplier to supplier. The more professional the supplier the better the warranty will be. At minimum with a used electric forklift truck, you should be aiming for 6-month major parts and labor including the battery and all traveling time. Traveling time is what it takes the forklift engineer to arrive at your site from his previous job.

The forklift truck warranty must be supplied to you in writing. A verbal warranty is not worth the paper it is written on. If you are offered a 30-day warranty walk away from the electric forklift and the supplier. What they are telling you is that they do not have faith in the machine.

With all forklifts the machine should be supplied with a full LOLER certificate. This is the equivalent of an MOT for your car and does not buy or hire a fork lift without one. It tells you that this forklift truck has passed its thorough examination and is safe to operate based on the health and safety guidelines. If you are not offered a LOLER certificate as part of the deal, insist on one or walk away.

Used Diesel Forklift Trucks for Sale

A used diesel forklift truck on hire or purchase could be a good buy if you know what to look for.

To start with does it have any oil leaks from underneath? Get underneath and have a look. Open the engine cover and check the seals and look to the bottom of the engine where the oil will pool. Look at the rear axle and look for signs of impact damage. Remember a forklift is a rear axle steer and a new replacement one will cost £1000’s. What are the conditions of the tyres? A forklift truck tyre has a raised band that is visible on the wall of the tyre. If the tire tread is worn down to the band, then insist on replacement tyres and do not persuade to have them “cut”.

Check the mast for signs of serious wear and tear, keep in mind the age of the forklift and where it has come from. The mast should move up and down smoothly without any jerking or grinding noises.

On the topic of where the forklift truck has come from, ask the supplier. It is important to know because if the fork lift truck has come from a foundry of fish market or another equally corrosive environment you need to avoid it. Ideally, you will want a used diesel forklift truck to have been maintained by a manufacturer on a short- or long-term hire contract. If it has then the forklift will have had original equipment manufactured parts (OEM). This means it has been well looked after. However, if it has been well serviced but has been working on Immingham docks then walk away.

Check the forks especially the heel of the fork. They should be bulbous and not flat. If they are flat perhaps the LOLER certificate needs to be questioned. The general condition of the forklift should be good. The paint should not be too bad and while it will have scratches it is nothing to worry about.

Used LPG Forklift Trucks for Sale

The alternative to a used diesel counterbalance forklift truck. The LPG engine is fuelled by liquid petroleum gas (LPG). One way to see if the engine has a problem is to simply look at the exhaust when you start the engine. If there is blue smoke just walk away as if you buy it there is a big repair bill or a complete write-off coming your way.

The general approach is the same as a diesel really when it comes to inspecting the used LPG forklifts truck. One thing you may need to consider if this is your first LPG forklift and that is a place to keep the replacement gas bottles. You must have a secure area or cage that is padlocked.

Used Fork lift Truck Deliveries

As I mentioned earlier on getting your forklift truck delivered is an additional cost and can range from about £120.00 to a lot more. Imagine you are buying a forklift truck from a supplier in Manchester and you are based in Hull. That is a long drive and a lot of time when you are restricted to 56 MPH. You may be able to negotiate it as part of the deal and get the supplier to throw it in. Often a forklift truck dealer will mark up the cost of transport as a way of recovering some of their costs.

When the forklift truck is being delivered remember to keep in touch with the dealer because you want to be on hand to receive it. Also, you will need your forklift truck operator on hand to give that first run around your premises to make sure all is well. On top of that, you want to make sure the way is clear for the forklift truck delivery driver to access your property. If they cannot drop off because your access is blocked with another delivery, they will charge you standing time. Standing time will be a minimum of an hourly rate even if they are held up for 20 minutes.

If you are having a used electric fork lift truck delivered like a reach truck you will want to make sure the charger can be installed immediately. If the reach truck arrives with a small amount of charge and you do not have a charger wired in then you could end up with a reach truck in your car park. Have an electrical engineer on standby if possible, to come in and wire up the reach truck charger. The same applies to any used electric fork lift truck, make sure the charger is wired in. If you have bought a powered pallet truck the chargers are often just 3 pin that goes into a normal socket.

Make sure your forklift operator is in on the delivery day or you may be looking for fork lift driver hire to try out your new forklift truck.

If you are looking to hire a forklift for a day it can be expensive once you factor in the premium rate of the truck and then the transport. We have our hire centres in Gateshead, near to Pelaw metro so it is easy to get too buy bus, metro or taxi. So, before you search for “forklift rental near me”, ask your neighbours if you can borrow their fork lift truck and driver.
